I don’t care much for religion, but kind of feel for this family, as they probably came to the Philippines with the best intentions and to help people. Their mission got off to a nightmare and hasn’t gotten any better since. The poor young guy looks exhausted.
The family seem somewhat naive, probably haven’t read up on how retarded what passes for justice in the land of fails and put too much faith in god to see them through this. This is is the Philippines, one of the most corrupt and slowest justice systems in the world, but this family expected to have their case resolved within a few months.
Lane Michael White was arrested at NAIA on September 17 after a bullet was found in his bag. Having refused to pay the P30,000 shakedown he then spent 6 days in jail before getting bail for the tune of P40,000. Probably wished he’d paid the bribe now.
“Every time we come in here we’re expecting it to be dismissed and it just keeps getting kicked down the road so I don’t know. We have hope in the Lord but our hope in the court system here is fading fast,” Ryan, the victim’s father, was quoted as saying.
One big problem they now face is it’s their word against filipinos. Firstly, filipinos only have to say something is true for it to be true. Secondly, a filipino will never admit they are wrong, regardless of how much evidence piles up to confirm the opposite.
“The bullet is his. Everything is documented,” OTS spokesman Jonathan Maliwat said, adding that the OTS had already turned over White’s case to the Aviation Security Group (Avsegroup), which in turn filed a case for illegal possession of ammunition against White in a Pasay City court.
I knew a foreigner who was accused of a crime which took 9 years to get thrown out of court. This guy needs to be prepared for the long haul with this, and some deep pockets for all those lawyer fees.
His family came to the Philippines to build a church in Palawan. What a wonderful start to their missionary project. Gotta test your faith something like that. I guess they’ll give up on that, realizing if their is a god he’s nowhere to be found in this nation of a 100 million dishonest scumbags.Published in
