A dog's tale (tail) Filipino style

I wrote this article in response to the recent discussion regarding the treatment of animals in the Philippines, especially dogs, lots and lots and lots of dogs!!  And asswipe uncle Dave has 7 of them!!

But first, let me apologize for the posted photograph.  It can be distressing for some, but I have seen dogs in the Philippines looking far worse than the one pictured here.  No humane culture would tolerate such suffering in an animal. 'nough said.

When it comes to dogs and taking care of them, I tell you guys, no amount of college education can improve that Flip IQ of 85 and below. So asswipe uncle Dave is a criminology graduate and currently deputy chief of PNP in mum's town, but he hasn't got a clue how to properly take care of animals.  Dave had 7 dogs about 6 years ago. Most of the dogs were corgi mixed with (likely) mongrel dogs, but I am not sure. Except for one mutt they called Waya - meaning Devil spent backwards.  Waya is full mongrel and a mean, greedy dog because they never disciplined her.  They favored her, having her sleep inside the house. However, once Waya became a full grown dog, they lost interest in her,  she was banished outside, in favor of a new poodle dog.

The mother of the 7 dogs is part corgi part something bitch which Dave called "Uk-Uk". More on Uk-Uk later.

Here's where these Flips demonstrate their utter stupidity.  The dogs are all confined in a small space. They are not tied up, but can ran around the yard. Over the years, Uk-Uk gave birth to so many litters, average of 5 to 7 litters,  Dave and his late wife would distribute the puppies to relatives and neighbors. Not one refused, even though they can hardly feed themselves, much less a dog?!  Dave and his wife did not even think that sterilizing Uk-Uk might have been a better idea than finding homes for her puppies, year after year?

How did Uk-Uk managed to get pregnant every season? Well, she's a Pinay doggie....she somehow managed to escape through a very narrow gap from a corner fence whenever she's on heat.   :)   Common sense dictates that Uk-Uk should have been fixed.  But no, it was considered too expensive. These low life Flips could afford it, but their moronic logical thinking was "expensive".

Now and again, Dave and his wife decided to keep a few of the litter, males and females. They would bring the vet in to neutered the males but never the females because of the costs.  During one of our visits, the Vet was there to fix some of the male dogs. Here is the scenario: Dave's wife standing inside the fence cuddling one of the dogs to get neutered, the Vet standing on the outside of the fence doing his job. It was quick and I hope he gave the poor dog some anaesthesia.  I asked Dave's wife what they were doing with the female dogs since obviously they're capable of breeding still?  "Oh, we keep them inside". But now and again, the females escaped, and one of them mated with a mangy mutt. So more puppies to give away.

Now we come to food.  We all know that dogs are carnivores by nature. But typical Filipino, Dave and his wife would feed the dogs mainly rice and some left overs, fish, chicken, vegetables. Now and again they'd buy a large tin of sardines and saturate the rice with it as dog food. Now and again they would buy raw pig bones from the city, the poor dogs must have thought their Christmas had come early!

Now we come back to Uk-Uk.  As mentioned earlier, Uk-Uk was able to escape through narrow gaps. When she's out, Uk-Uk would raid the chicken coops that belonged to the neighbors, and would ran to hide up the hillside, perhaps to consume the dead chicken. Considering the rice diet that Dave fed his dogs, can we blame Uk-Uk?  The neighbors bitched a lot about Uk-Uk raiding their chickens, and they were losing at least one chicken a day, but no one wanted to complain to Dave and his wife. Perhaps, because they knew they'll get ignored.  One day, the neighbors has had enough. They decided to bait Uk-Uk, killed her and cooked her: Asuzena stew was poor Uk-Uk's fate.

The neighbors done the deed while Dave and his wife were in the city. They told him next day. He said nothing, but his wife was upset. But what can they do? It was their fault that the neighbors were losing their chickens.  Perhaps, a good outcome from Uk-Uk's death was that Dave kept a tighter control of his dogs.

David: I agree. I've had endless problems with idiot neighbors which (in any other country) would be solved with a friendly chat ... or which simply would have never occurred in the first place because neighbors don't behave with such complete disregard for others. Example: stealing, and letting their animals roam around causing damage. But no, the Filipino has to turn EVERY disagreement into an opportunity for a vendetta, because HE IS RIGHT and EVERYONE ELSE IS WRONG.David: I agree. One thing I'd like to share which I think most of you guys may already know is that most police or government workers here (Even traffic enforcers) here tend to abuse their authority wherever they go.

Everywhere they go, starting from the public transport they ride you will rarely see them pay for it. From the food they eat and down to the cigrarette they smoke. It's either free or it's a rip off to the seller.

And when you approach most of them, no matter how nice so long as they are the ones who appear to be the bad guy, Id say most of the time, you will never win or they won't give a damn to what you say.

And worse case scenarios would be you or your family gets picked on or bullied by them like they demonstrate their influence or position and they want you to fear them.

Sadly that's how it was been here and the cycle will just continue and never end.

"here's the uneducated Filipino, completely incapable of realizing that his diet of shitty food is making him ill and stupid,"

forawhilesir, I doubt nutrition education are being taught at school. Also, the Filipinos have this mindset that if your diet consists mostly of meat, therefore you are perceived to be rich. In any case, even if nutrition education exists, it won't change the Filipino mindset that vegetables are good for you, because to them, vegetables are is the poor man's diet.
How many times have you been to parties like fiestas, weddings, etc and noticed that not one vegetable dish on the table, other than the few slivers of carrots and capsicums for garnish? or even fruits? The Philippines is blessed with the availability of fruits year round, but when they serve fruits for special occasions, it's tinned fruits then mixed the with condensed milk for fruit salad. Whatever is wrong with a platter of fresh fruits on the table?

So true Donnie! I noticed this, that even the lowly Barangay Captain tends to big note himself! Or even the security guard!! "yes Ma'am, I can sort it out for you!". Only to find out that he's a nobody, just a nobody who can't even make a decision without consulting anyone. But then, aren't they all??

I forgot to mention in the article that yes, Dave and his wife were aware that Uk-Uk was stealing chickens. But they did nothing. The most practical solution would have been to fix the gaps in the fence. That might have saved Uk-Uk's life. But after awhile, Dave decided to keep Uk-Uk out of the house altogether, asking province aunt to feed Uk-Uk.

So here we see a very good example of Filipino stupidity. So the problem is, your dog kept escaping to steal chickens. The solution? Let her go, keep her out. That decision only ensured that Uk-Uk's life was shortened, because then she was free to steal as many chickens.

That partial quote pretty much summed up the entire country's out look on life. And we aren't talking about fighting chickens.

I'm sure they outnumber the human population. I go to a gym and the whole place stinks of their shit. Every time I go out the door they go ballistic, one in a tiny cage, two tied to one meter ropes, five bouncing around like rubber balls. As I ride the exercise bike for half an hour there are about thirty patrolling by. Really really out of control problem. I do my hiking and fucking thousands of them barking at me, howling, whimpering, really sick problem. They just shouldn't be there but like every other problem here it will never get better only worse.I'm sure they outnumber the human population. The best I have seen them get is rice and malungi soup. Usually I see them tearing apart pampers and eating the shit. Yes they are carnivores, so they are almost all malnourished and suffer terribly from joint and lack of protein illnesses.

Good lord! With conditions so bleak and dire for the average Filipino keeping pets should be one of their last priorities. I love animals and have had wide range of them as pets over the years but if I really hit the skids financially I would give my pet away to someone that could look after them until I got back into some money, or better yet not keep any pets until I could sustainably afford to look after them.Good lord! @ Donnie they take that attitude overseas with them too. ie "I'm a gov't employee so I can come and go easily. My tourist visa will always be approved"! It doesn't take long though and they are quickly put into place.
