REPOST: Why Pinoy Pride will never save the Philippines

An interesting article which reinforces everything we talk about here on PFB. This is written by a Filipino.

Why Pinoy Pride will never save the Philippines

Some Pinoy Pride stuff had been in the radar lately. Local media ran afeature on a recently appointed American judge with Filipino blood (though the woman, thankfully, said she is an American first). Some NBA fans were quick to boast that Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has Filipino blood. But same as the judge, he is an American first. Many Filipinos recently raised hellover Katherine Ryan’s controversial joke about Filipinos being “experimented on” in the cosmetic industry, when it is apparently based on an impression about the sad truth about the state of children in our country. Filipinos always feel punctured or insulted when they are the butt of jokes. They believe nothing should get in the way of being able to walk with their head held high, proud and happy, lording it over others. Filipinos insist that they deserve to be proud and that the solution to our problems is to have more pride as a people.

Oh really?

I have always been strongly vocal against Pinoy Pride for a good reason: it will never save the Philippines.

Goes to show you that pride can fail (photo courtesy of Business Insider)

Pinoy Pride seems to be the belief that Filipinos are a special people from the rest of the world, and thus deserve special respect. For example, they insist that no one has the right to make Pinoys the butt of jokes. And if Pinoys are not given this special respect, they were “cheated,” “insulted” or “oppressed.” Pinoys love to imagine that they are “oppressed” people in the world. But when they do things like post pictures of themselves wearing their employer’s clothes without permission (the maid in Singapore), slap a helpless Alzheimer’s patient (Jonathan Aquino case), steal from a US children’s cancer fund (Rene Ballenas pleaded guilty to larceny), make a loan in the U.S. then run home to avoid paying it, murder a famous fashion designer (Andrew Cunanan killing Gianni Versace), complain about someone else’s name (the Filipino complaining about someone being named Kiki in Australia) or be on the defensive after the botched Manila Hostage Crisis, you know they are far from “oppressed” or “deserving pride.” It’s more like they need therapy. If only there was a psychiatric treatment called Ego Therapy.

Back to Katherine Ryan: Why is it that Filipinos tend to be the butt of some jokes like this? Most obvious answer is that they are clearly doing something wrong. Else, there would be no reason for someone to create the Top 8 Habits of Filipino Jerks (the article implies that if you are insulted by Ryan’s joke, then you are a jerk!).

I also see a connection between Pinoy Pride and the tendency of our culture to be effete and boisterous when it comes to self-promotion. This self-promotion often comes as efforts to claim that being Pinoy is special and is the secret behind the success of some people. Pinoys will snag the chance to ride on names, such as as Charice Pempengco, Arnel Pineda, Manny Pacquiao and Lea Salonga. This reasoning probably came from a false syllogism:

Charice/Manny/Arnel/Lea are talented and celebrated.

Charice/Manny/Arnel/Lea are Filipino.

Ergo Filipinos are all talented and should be celebrated.

I’m a Filipino, so I am talented and should be celebrated.

Unfortunately, this all goes down the toilet when you find that these vocal “proud Pinoys” are actually cockroaches who are too lazy to work, go drinking all day and want to milk their relatives dry.

Truly, as fellow blogger Gogs says, KSP is the root of all evil. And this KSPness is just so prominent when demonstrated by Filipinos. It’s just too hard to not notice.

It certainly is ironic while the Philippines is predominantly Catholic, its greatest fault is the worst sin of all, pride. So it’s time to remind Pinoys about their beliefs. An article from, eloquently explains why pride is bad news for anyone. Although this is a Catholic article, it explains things in a way that any Christian – or person with religion – would agree with. I am confident that even an atheist, deist or agnostic or other non-religious would agree, pride is a major cause of wrongdoing in human society.

Then come some critics saying “GRP is negative, putting down the Filipino.” OK then, name an instance where a Pinoy Pride initiative actually uplifted the lives of Filipinos, and brought them out of dysfunction.

That’s the reality. Pinoy Pride never uplifted Filipino lives. Because Pinoy Pride itself is an act to cover up Filipino failings. It is a symptom of other attitude problems, such as sense of self-entitlement, emotionalism, anti-intellectualism and love of the underdog.

Let me lift an explanation from an earlier blog post, slightly revised: Pinoy Pride initiatives rise out of the imaginary notion that Filipinos are under attack. But way I see it, they are just attacking themselves. Filipinos are the ones declaring themselves inferior, and then imagine someone else saying it, like a foreigner. Based on this schizophrenic fear of a delusional enemy, they embark on Filipino Pride programs to try and push up their image. But these programs may involve covering up or denying the mistakes of the Filipinos. Thus, Filipinos actually end up pulling themselves down further.

Pinoy Pride will never save the Philippines because it is part of the problem. It was never a solution. It leads to Filipinos acting foolishly and without wisdom, caring only to feed their ego. Acts of pride are self-deflating by nature, because they are acts of projection that highlight the person’s faults instead of strengths. People may believe they are showing strength or good traits, when in fact, they are showing serious flaws.

I believe we can never attack Pinoy Pride enough, because it is the cancer itself that continues to shoot down all efforts to improve our people’s behavior. Why is corruption so hard to remove? Because the people are too proud to change. Perhaps that’s why our countrymen are experiencing a moral crisis. We’re Pinoys, we’re already perfect, we’re special. So we don’t need to change.

And neither do the dysfunctions of our country.

You hit the bulls-eye on that one buddy. There is so much pride in this country that it delays or halts progress. I know that pride is poison because whenever I do have one of my prideful egotistical moments, I’ve been unable to see things for what it is, and I end up losing at the end. It’s not often that I find myself in these moments, since I know when to back down, submit, and own up to my faults.
A Filipino would make a mistake, and call it a solution, and be too proud to admit that it’s really a mistake. Here is a true scenario from last week:
My wife wanted to get music on her iphone, so she took it to a Games&Gadgets to get it hooked up. The shop technician told her to bring her own iphone cable so they can use it to transfer the files from their laptop, to her phone, even though these idiots sells iphone cables, charges, and other iphone accessories. Well anyway, we came again with the cable this time, and after they attempted to transfer music files onto her phone for about 1 minute, they tell her “Sorry mam, this is charger only, your cable not working.” So we went next door to the other shop, which offers the same service, except they don’t sell gadgets, but phones only. Ironically this shop had all the necessary cables needed to transfer files, but I requested to use the cable we brought just so I can look into something. Then guess what? Yep! It fuckin worked! I knew I also had compatibility issues when trying to transfer files from her iphone to/from my laptop. So obviously the employee at Games&Gadgets had a compatibility issue too, but had too much pride in her competency to admit to it, instead, she blames it on the cable we brought in. For the record, “IPHONE CHARGERS ARE USED FOR TRANSFERRING FILES!” But I guess those idiots didn’t work with iphones enough to not know that. Or she knew that but wanted to delay the process by telling us to bring in our own (even though they sell it), and hoping we didn’t come back. This is the kind of incompetent service you can expect in Philippines.

I get a good laugh every time I hear the term Filipino pride. It is an illusion but something they actually believe. They really think they matter in world events. They think they are important when then have absolutely no leverage. O.K. It’s fine to be proud of your country but you have to accomplish something first before you can claim that you are good at something. We all know the everyday frustrations of living in the Philippines. If they are proud of this clusterfuck of mayhem it just proves what morons they really are. I just came back from our beach house in Bicol. It’s a 500 kilometer trip. I do enjoy it there. I might bitch about a lot of things here but there are also many things to enjoy. The beach in Cam Sur is one of them. Also, the people in the barrio there are a lot different than the people in the Manila area. More trustworthy. I guess they just haven’t been able to get out of the province to learn how to be a true scamming Filipino. Anyway. My original rant was to talk about the re-blocking of the highway. You have probably all experienced how they dig up one lane of highway which only leaves one lane open to traffic. On my last trip to Bicol I passed thru dozens of these fucking time consuming traffic jams. They have one national road called the Marharlika highway. It is a two lane highway. When they dig up a section of 100 meters or so it will take up to two months to finish. So this one small section of construction causes massive traffic jams for two fucking months. Many times once they dig up the road and make it impassable they just stop working. You pass thru these hell holes and there are no workers in sight. They just don’t give a damn. Is this the Filipino pride thet are so proud about. They don’t even know the proper way to repair a highway. I guess the sign that they place by the construction that says “sorry for the inconvenience ” makes everything OK. I would feel better if the sign said “sorry but idiot Filipinos are in charge of this project so go fuck yourself”

Look at this article about Dan Browns Novel Inferno.

From the article I quote :

This is not the first time that the Philippines’ so-called ugly side was described in novels and movies.

Hollywood actress Claire Danes got a lot of bad press when she shot her 1999 movie “Brokedown Palace” in the Philippines. She described Manila as smelling “of cockroaches. There’s no sewage system in Manila, and people have nothing there. People with, like, no arms, no legs, no eyes, no teeth.”

She was later declared persona non grata.

and this one made me laugh…….

Tourism officials have been trying to bring to boost the image of the Philippines with its catchy phrase, “More Fun in the Philippines.” The Department of Tourism reported an increase in tourist arrivals last year.

and thats how you change a terrible image !!

Oh LORD ! We did it !!! We found the Words, we sorted them into a SENTENCE and somehow we got Lucky and the sentence is CACTHY ! The PHILIPPINES IS SAVED !!!

Pinoy power did it Again….Failed !

But come here to tell us how smart we are, how peaceful and clean our country is, then you are very welcome.

But one Word about cockroaches and you’re OUT !

      Persona non grata LOL
thats what pinoys are to the WORLD !
Funny how they can label me, you, anyone that.
And HILLARIOUS the effect such would have on me !
Fuck you Philippines, I am never smelling you Again !

Add me to your persona non grata list !

      MORONS !

If Claire Danes is on the persona non grata list of pinoyland then I wanna be on the list too !!!

Add me you imbeciles, you can atleast manage not to fuck that up cant you ????

In one scene of ABC’s Desperate Housewives, Susan Mayer played by Teri Hatcher was going to be checked by a gynecologist but refused to be examined. She said, “Okay, before we go any further, can I check those diplomas? Coz I would just like to make sure they are not from some med school in the Philippines.” For this, the government demanded for a public apology from ABC and form the actress herself.

I also learned that Alec Baldwin is persona non grata. Its basically anyone WHO said their honest opinion. They are not welcome !

          Get out !
          This is the FAILIPPINES !

About all this Persona Non Grata thing…

Alec Baldwin was even threatened by some senator WHO is supposed to have said.
“Why dont Alec Baldwin come here and we will show him mayhem.”

One of their Senators showing his people the civilized way of behaving.
A great exampl to follow ! Anyone says a joke about you then you make death
threats. Its okay, this is the Philippines ! We are civilized people !

The pinoys are so full of it that if a fello countryman or woman says something which is not a positive lie then they will try to make one of their own a non
grata persona. Thereby ignoring human rights and international conventions saying
that you cannot take citizenship from a person if that Means the person then has
    no country.

International Laws that the Philippines signed, a treaty they are proud to be part of. Yet in a second they will ignore if anyone says “the street smeels more like shit than urine today. Maybe it will rain…”

My reply would be…”sure, and you get the HELL OUT OF MY COUNTRY TOO !”

Lets see if that makes you more sad than me… Call me and let me know !

Yeah, they are so defensive at the mere mention of Philippines in a negative light. It strikes a nerve. It reveals a nugget of truth about them, and truth is their enemy. They work so hard on illusion and lip service, trying to make Philippines out to be the opposite of what it really is.

The truth REALLY HURTS in Philippines

Yeah, and the senator who threatened to beat him up is now in jail for stealing!! You can’t be patriot of your country when you are stealing from it. It seems the biggest scoundrels are always the most patriotic. It’s cheap currency for them to pretend they are doing something and the idiots buy it.

Claire Danes said the place smelled, was awful or just typical Manila. The valiant Estrada did a PNG on her. Years later when he was running for mayor, he campaigned saying the place is run down, awful, smells, etc. LOL!!

an interesting quote i heard on the movie Harold and Kummar 2, when president Bush told them while smoking a reefer. “you don’t have to trust your government to be a good American, you just have to believe in your country”. what i am trying to say is, this Filipino pride could be a good thing but is being abused by so many. like, ok pride in Manny Pacquiao’s boxing achievements could help motivate a person to work harder and improve his life. not only in the field of sports but in his studies, job or business as well. but you hit the nail on the head when you said most pinoys would rather drink and say Manny is a great pinoy so i’m also a great pinoy, i mean c’mon Manny worked his ass off to be where he is, and you wont find that success at the bottom of a bottle of ginebra and waving your fist in the air screaming, “pinoy pride”!

i think one major problem we have as a people, we lack the love of country, despite us clamouring for change, majority of our people accept bribes during elections and expect these candidates to be clean government officials. and china despite salami slicing our territories in the West Philippine (South china) sea, our fellow countrymen opt to go on vacation in hong kong and mainland china, even Manny Pacquiao is having another fight in macau. i personally make a concious effort to buy Philippine made items, if i cant, i steer clear away from chinese made items, and no i’m not going to make any sort of vacation plans to china. china tried t pull the same thing to Vietnam and look what happened. even their students would not buy pens made in china, despite being cheaper.

i have family and living in the U.S and London and their children are doing well, along with other Filipinos who migrated there (but started out as illegal immigrants). they are one of the most law abiding, hard working and successful people i know. now why cant we emulate this sort of attitude in our own county? this has baffled me and my friends.

to end, yes i do love the Philippines, but i really despise the people who are running it… maayong adlaw sa inyo tanan

That is actually a good point. They should look up to his hard work and dedication. They should also realize he’s just a boxer,, not a politician. As a congressman, he’s done nothing noteworthy to suggest he’ll make a great senator. Further, he could be a voice to invigorate the people. He could speak out against corruption and name the most-evil in the country to make a true change. Instead, he pals around with them and let them use his star power. He keeps saying he’s doing it for the people of the Philippines so how about doing something positive for the Philippines?
That is my only gripe with the guy. That, and he embraces the messiah complex Filipinos bestow upon him.

As a (new) Filipino member of this enlightened community, let me give you my two bits here…
First of all I don’t subscribe to Pinoy Pride mainly because it is just self-motivational bullshit for most of us lazy self-deluded bastards. You can clearly see it for what it really is.
Another victory for Manny Pacquiao? Bah, who cares about boxing these days – give me a UFC fight!!! Professional boxing is just about as fake as the WWE, with all these alphabet-soup titles and Mafia-front organisations backing these spurious belts.
Jessica Sanchez and Jasmine Trias (almost becoming) American Idols? Big effing deal, can’t one see by the show’s title alone? AMERICAN IDOL. It should therefore go to an American. That is why Philip Philips won over Ms. Sanchez in spite of spirited campaigns by the Filipino community in America spreading the news back home and across all Philippine communities to flood AI’s media outlets (even flouting the fact that votes can only be counted if it was done IN THE USA)
Pia Wurtzbach and Megan Young clinching global beauty titles? Goes to show what a little drop of foreign blood can do to Pinoy’s wretched collective self-esteem. Look at our local talent searches and I bet these talent scouts do not see the potentials of our Ifugao, Badjao and Ibanag tribes. It’s always the “mutts” and half-breeds (usually with a Filipina mum) or “balikbayans” flouting their slangy American/British English and well-toned abs that get the breaks.
    Pinoy pride my arse indeed.

    1. Profile gravatar of Johnny

Dude, I am with you on the UFC!!! Boxing is so boring to watch now. We all kind of figured this was going to be a 12 round decision with not a lot of action like the last 2 boring bradley fights with Pac. I only caught the last round of this last one cause, I’ve finally learned especially after that mayweather borefest.

It is funny cause my cousins were so happy for Jessica Sanchez. I said who cares? She just happens to have some Filipino blood and suddenly its a phenomenon? Fuck, you can throw a rock in any direction in the Philippines to find a singer. Then you can find some very good bands and singers who are awesome when they perform. I need to tune in when a Filipino living in the USA does something? What kind of sense does that make? ”

If Manny really cared for his people and his country, he would speak out against vote-selling. Or even more simply, just tell the people not to elect Estrada or Binay ever again. That alone would improve the country. Instead he has to run for congress and do nothing? Now as Senator he’s going to do something important?

      1. Profile gravatar of 86andBelow

Manny is way out of his depth in the political arena. He sits there with his embarrassed half-smile and confused look. I’d be surprised if he hasn’t been fleeced out of half of his earnings already.

Although I dislike him as a person, at least Maynever had the mental capacity to make a lot of money albeit at the expense of boxing.

Maynever solidified UFCs crown with the pitter-patter marathon with Manny.
